The No. 10 Oklahoma men’s golf team won its second straight tournament as it took the inaugural Liberty Spring Invitational title with a three-round 847 (-17). The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at the 7,059-yard, par-72 Poplar Grove Golf Course in Amherst, Va.
The win is the ninth under sixth-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl, and Saturday marked the first time the Sooners have won back-to-back events under his direction. Last weekend, they secured the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas.
"We had another nice week, and we finished the job we set out to do," Hybl said. "We had four guys with a chance to win individually, and I think they all learned from today even though we didn’t get the individual trophy. We have good things to build on heading to Southern Hills for the Big 12 Championship."
The Sooners cleared No. 19 North Carolina, who recorded an 862 (-2), by 15 strokes. Tournament host Liberty took third at 12 over par, Lipscomb University finished fourth with an 878 (+14) and Campbell and Radford tied for fifth at 20 over par.
OU senior Charlie Saxon, junior Beau Titsworth and freshman Grant Hirschman finished the third round in a six-way tie for first place with 3-under-par 213s. Following a two-hole playoff between the OU trio, Liberty’s Mathieu Fenasse and Isaiah Logue and North Carolina’s William Register, Fenasse claimed individual medalist honors.
The first-place finish is a career best for all three Sooners in a team event. Saxon also took first place in the individual Lions Classic in 2013.
For the final round, Saxon tallied a 73 (+1) and pocketed four birdies, bringing his event total to 15. After missing the entire fall with an injury, Saxon has placed within the top 20 in four straight tournaments.
Hirschman posted a 1-under-par score of 71 on Saturday, his third par-or-better round of the tournament, while Titsworth, who started the day tied for 16th, pocketed seven birdies en route to a 3-under 69. Hirschman has finished in the top 20 in eight of his 10 career events.
With a 2-under-par 214, senior Michael Gellerman tied for seventh place, his sixth top-10 showing of the season and the 15th of his career. Gellerman sat at 4 over par after five holes but played the final 13 holes at 4 under to finish the round with an even-par 72.
Sophomore Max McGreevy shot a 79 (+7) on Saturday, bringing his tournament total to 223 (+7). McGreevy tied for 27th place.
The Sooners will return to the course for the 2015 Big 12 Championship on April 27-29 (Monday-Wednesday) at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
