Sooners’ Soo set to compete as individual in NCAA Championship

Oklahoma women’s golfer Julienne Soo, ranked No. 40 by GolfWeek, is set for an individual appearance in the 2017 NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 19-26 at the par-72, 6,343-yard Rich Harvest Farms golf course in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Soo qualified for the national tournament after finishing as the top individual not on an advancing team (T7) at the NCAA Lubbock Regional on May 8-10 at the Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas. The sophomore, who is making her first appearance in the NCAA Championships, fired a 213 (-3) at the event, capped off by a 69 (-3) in the final round. Her appearance marks the first at the national tournament for the Sooners since 2013-14 and the first individual qualifier for Oklahoma since Ellen Mueller qualified in 2010.

Soo, who was a 2017 All-Big 12 Team selection, has finished in the top-15 seven times in 11 events this season and holds a 71.70 (-0.21) season-stroke average, which is on pace to be the lowest in school history.  The South Yarra, Australia, native has registered a program-record-tying 22 rounds at par-or-better this season through the NCAA Regional. Earlier this spring, Soo earned the first medalist honors of her career after posting a program-best 203 (-13) at the Clover Cup.

“I’m really excited to play in this tournament,” Soo said. “I think it’s going to be an amazing experience to play with such a great field. I can’t wait to test my game against the best in the country.”

Competition is scheduled to get underway Friday at 7:30 a.m. CT and teams and individuals will compete in 18 holes each of stroke play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on an advancing team will move on to play one final round of stroke play on Monday to determine the individual medalist as well as the top eight teams advancing to match-play competition on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“Jules has been working really hard all year to prepare for this tournament,” OU Head Coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. “We walked the course on Wednesday and this place is absolutely a long-hitter’s paradise. This week will be a great experience for her to continue to grow as a golfer.”

Soo is set to tee off on Friday at 8:25 a.m. CT. Live stats and results are available online at GolfStat.com.
