The Oklahoma men’s golf team wrapped up the second year of the Big 12 Match Play Tournament on Sunday, finishing the event by winning both matches against Baylor and Iowa State. Oklahoma State split a pair of matches Sunday. The three-day event was held at the par-71, 7,007-yard Club at Houston Oaks in Hockley, Texas.
The Big 12 is the first conference to create its own match play tournament, taking advantage of the format that is used to determine the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. The event was being played on three days consisting of pool play for five sessions (Friday through Sunday morning) followed by a championship round that took place on Sunday afternoon. Texas Tech won the championship, defeating Kansas in the final match.
Garett Reband brought in the first win defeating Travis McInroe, 4 and 3, to get an early lead on the Bears. Logan McAllister and Quade Cummins won the final hole to earn a pair of wins in their matches. Jake Holbrook edged past Johnny Keefer, 2 and 1.
OU picked up its second team win in its final match against Iowa State. Four individual matches went in favor of the Sooners to secure the victory.
Reband earned a 3 and 2 victory over Iowa State’s T. Kinney. Cummins brought in the second individual win defeating Bryce Hammer, 6 and 4. Holbrook won his second match of the day, 3 and 2, against Ricky Costello. Welch halved his afternoon match.
The two victories brought the Sooners to a total of three points on the weekend.
For the second day in a row, Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team split a pair of matches and tied for fifth place.
The Cowboys finished off pool play with a 3-2-1 win over Kansas State during the morning session. OSU finished with a 2-2 mark to find itself in the fifth-place match against West Virginia at the par-71, 7,007-yard layout
Against the Wildcats, freshman Hazen Newman led the way with a 5-and-3 victory over Riccardo Leo, while classmate Brian Stark added a 1-up win over Tim Tillmanns. The Cowboys garnered their third point courtesy of sophomore Aman Gupta’s 2-and-1 win over Will Hopkins.
Freshman Rayhan Thomas tied his match with George Clarke.
K-State’s two wins came courtesy of a 3 and 2 win by Kyle Vance over junior Austin Eckroat and Jacob Eklund’s 5 and 3 win over senior Ferdinand Müller.
The Cowboys and Mountaineers split their six matches to share fifth place at the second edition of the tournament.
Thomas got OSU on the board with a 4-and-3 win over Matthew Sharpstene, while Gupta added a 3 and 1 win over Philipp Matlari. Newman produced OSU’s third point with a 2 and 1 triumph over Mark Goetz.
Eckroat fell to Logan Perkins, 3 and 1, while sophomore Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen lost to Nico Lang, 6 and 5. Etienne Papineau tallied a 4 and 3 win over Stark.
The Cowboys will close out their fall schedule at the East Lake Cup, which gets underway on Oct. 28. OU wraps up its fall slate at the Ka’anapoli Classic in Ka’anapoli, Hawaii, Oct. 31 – No. 3.
