MESA, Ariz. – Ty Stites led Oklahoma City University by shooting a top-10 score in the NAIA men’s golf championships Wednesday at Las Sendas Golf.
Stites produced a two round score of 72-74—146 to stand nine shots behind the top individual scores in a tie for 10th place. The Stars hold ninth place after the 36 holes.
Oklahoma City has compiled a 306-300—606. No. 5 Texas Wesleyan stretched their lead to 13 strokes with a 293-283—576 on the par-71, 6,925-yard course.
Stites, a sophomore from Sallisaw, Okla., sank birdies on the par-4, 430-yard 4th hole, par-3, 120-yard 7th hole, par-3, 135-yard and the par-5, 591-yard No. 15. Ben Hadden from Kansas Wesleyan improved on his lead to -4 with a 68-70—138.
Jack Madden of OCU carded a 76-72—148 to tie for 22nd place. Madden, a freshman from Dungannon, Northern Ireland, Ireland, buried three of his four birdies on the front nine.
Peri’Don Castille supplied the Stars with a 80-79—159. Castille, a junior from Dallas, sank a birdie on the par-5, 564-yard 2nd hole. Carson Seals, a junior from Ardmore, Okla., carded a 78-75—153. Seals knocked in two birdies on the par-3, 194-yard 5th hole and the par-3, 120-yard 7th hole.
Brandon Strathe, a sophomore from Owasso, Okla., had a 88-80—168 for Oklahoma City.
OCU teed off in 65-degree temperatures. The temperature rose to 74 degrees, and the wind gusted to 23 mph.
The Stars will begin their third round at 9:30 a.m. CDT (7:30 a.m. MST) Thursday.
