MUSKOGEE, Okla. – With two golfers finishing in the top 10, Southwestern Oklahoma State surged into second place at the 18th NSU Classic at Muskogee Golf Club Tuesday. The Bulldogs shot the best score of the final round. UCO finished third and host NSU was sixth.
Stefan Idstam and Joby Gray both shot 4-under 67s Tuesday. Idstam finished at 8-under 205, two shots behind winner Austin Smith of Arkansas Tech, which also won the team battle by two strokes at 14-under to 12-under for SWOSU.
Also for the Bulldogs, Marques Gomez finished 17th at 1-over, Kason Cook shot a final round of 68 to tie for 27th at 4-over and Ole Hatlelid tied for 59th at 9 over.
UCO freshman Nick Pierce shot a 1-under 70 to finish the tournament in eighth place. Pierce led all Bronchos with a three-round score of 211. He put up rounds of 72, 69 and 70 in his second career collegiate tournament.
Wesley Jackson was second-best for UCO, finishing at 216. Jackson also shot a 70 on the final day after shooting rounds of 69 and 77 on Monday.
Eli Armstrong and Cody Troutman both finished tied for 27th place. Armstrong had a consistent tournament, shooting rounds of 73 and 71 on Monday and a 2-over 73 in Tuesday’s final round.
Troutman shot a 71 in the first round on Monday, but slipped to a 78 in the second round. Troutman recovered on Tuesday though, firing UCO’s lowest score of the tournament at 3-under 68.
Alberto Ruiz-Nava also played consistent golf for the Bronchos. He shot rounds of 73, 73 and 74 to finish in a tie for 40th place.
Northeastern State fell a couple of positions in the final round. The RiverHawks’ Garrett McDaniel carded a 1-under-par 70 to lead the way for NSU. Tate Williamson, who entered the day in second in the medalist race, shot 1-over on the day and settled for third place individually.
NSU’s other scores included Ty Shelnut 75, Navid Majidi 79 and Tyler Green 83.
