Tulsa tied for fifth at Jack Nicklaus Invitational at OSU Scarlet Course, Staggs, Mabry tied for eighth

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Tulsa men’s golf team sits tied for 5th place after the first two rounds of action at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational. The Golden Hurricane had a 36-hole total of 585 and is tied with Troy and Kent State.

Host Ohio State is currently leading the twelve-team field at 574. Purdue (580), East Tennessee State (582) and GRU Augusta (538) are just behind the Buckeyes and just in front of the three squads tied at 5th.

Senior Colton Staggs is off to another great performance after winning last week’s Windon Memorial Classic. Staggs shot 1-under par in the first round of play on the par-71 course, carding three birdies on holes 4, 12 and 13 as well as two bogeys. In the second round he shot a 74 for a total of 144 on the day to head into the final round tied for 8th place.

Fellow senior Matt Mabrey also finished the opening day with a 144 total after carding 72 in both rounds on Sunday. Mabrey sank two birdies in each set of 18 holes to keep himself in the hunt. The pair sits just four strokes behind the individual leader.

Sebastian Smith ended Sunday just two strokes behind his teammates at 146. The sophomore transfer is currently tied for 19th place after he shot 72 in round one and 74 in round two.

Sophomore Matthew Marquez is tied for 47th at 153 and Francisco Yanez carded 157 through the first 36 holes.

Matt Green out of Kansas State is currently atop the leaderboard at a two-under par 140. Stuart Macdonald (Purdue) and Tee-k Kelly (Ohio State) are right on Green’s heels at 141 and Chase Johnson (Kent State), Grant Weaver (Ohio State) and Adrian Meronk (ETSU) are all tied in 4th place with 142.

The Hurricane will tee-off the final round of the Invitational at 7 am CT from hole 10. To follow along with live scoring, click here
