TU’s Mabrey ties for sixth in Desert Shootout

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – After three rounds of competition at the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz. at the par 72 Palm Valley Golf Club, Tulsa senior Matt Mabrey finished with a 207 total, 9-under par, and tied for sixth-place. The Golden Hurricane finished in 10th-place after carding 288 in the last round for a team total of 860.

Mabrey finished the day two-under par after birdying four holes Friday and only recording two bogeys. His 207 three-round total put him at nine-under in the final standings, tied for sixth and just three strokes back of the individual medalist Antoine Rozner from UMKC.

Fellow Senior Colton Staggs finished in the top-30 after carding 214 through all three days of action. His 2-under par total earned him a share of 28th-place.

Francisco Yanez turned in the best third-round score for the Hurricane, finishing the day with a 69, bringing his tournament total to 220. Matthew Marquez turned in his second straight even-par round and finished with 221.

No. 46 Kansas won the team competition with an 829 (-35) total. No. 36 Iowa State moved up in the ranks to finish second with 837 (-27). Wichita State (838), Idaho (839) and host Denver (840) rouned out the top-five.

Up next for Tulsa is a trip to Little Rock, Ark. from March 30-31 for the UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic.
