UCO 12th, OCU 24th in preseason Division II golf poll

NEW YORK (Aug. 28, 2013) –  Central Oklahoma will open the 2013-14 men’s golf season ranked No. 12 in the pre-season GolfWorld/Nike Golf Division II poll that was released Thursday.

The Bronchos third-year head coach Pat Bates have two starters back from last year’s 12th-place team and finished with 163 points in balloting of head coaches from around the country.  Defending national champion Barry is ranked No. 1 with 343 points.

Nova Southeastern is second in the poll, followed by Lynn, Florida Southern and Cal State-Monterey Bay.

UCO is the highest-ranked team from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in the poll, with Central Missouri the only other top-25 team at No. 15.  The Bronchos ran away with the MIAA title last spring in their first year in the  league and were second in the Central/Midwest Super Regional before finishing 12th in the national tournament.

Senior Chris Muriana and sophomore Eric Kline are returning starters for UCO.

The Bronchos open their six-tournament fall schedule at the Nebraska-Kearney Fall Invitational Sept. 9-10.

Oklahoma Christian was ranked No. 24 OC received 44 points in the balloting by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Eagles were the only Heartland Conference team ranked in the top 25.

OC is entering the second year of the NCAA Division II membership process. During the 2012-13 academic year, the Eagles rose as high as No. 10 in the Division II poll after their dominating 52-shot win in the National Christian College Athletic Association Championship in October.

But during the spring season, the Eagles – who remain ineligible for Division II postseason play – tumbled down the rankings, despite winning two tournaments against Division II competition. OC finished 42nd in the balloting in the final poll for 2012-13, released in mid-May.

"It’s great to be recognized by the Division II coaches in the poll,” OC coach David Lynn said. “I feel like over the course of this year, a lot more coaches will see us in Division II events and we will have a good chance to be rated more accurately than last year. We are starting at the bottom and working our way up and the team and I are looking forward to the challenge."

Among OC’s returning players this season will be sophomore Sam Johnston, who was named to the Division II All-America second-team list and the Division II All-Freshman team, and senior Alasdair Dalgliesh, who tied with Johnston for runner-up honors at the NCCAA Championship in 2012.
