UCO grabs lead at Broncho Invitational at Gaillardia

OKLAHOMA CITY (March 23) – Under-par rounds by Russ Purser and Eric Kline sparked Central Oklahoma to the first-day lead at the Broncho Invitational Presented by RCB Bank Monday at Gaillardia Country Club.

Purser fired a sizzling four-under 68 and Kline added a one-under 71 as the Bronchos came in with a two-under 286 total to take a five-shot lead over Central Missouri.  Missouri Southern is third in the 16-team field at 294, followed by Southwestern Oklahoma (297) and Northeastern State (298).

Final-round action begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“Russ and Eric played great today,” head coach Pat Bates said.  “This is a tough golf course and they both hit a lot of quality shots and made some big putts.  We’re in a good position, but will need to play well tomorrow.”

UCO also got a 73 from Logan Gray, while Alexander Hughes shot 74 and Wesley Jackson 79.  Eli Armstrong had a 78 and Cody Troutman an 83 playing as individual medalists.

Purser is third in the individual standings, two strokes behind Oklahoma State’s Tanner Kesterson and SWOSU’s Stefan Idstam, while Kline is tied for sixth.

Purser made the turn at three-under 33 after making four birdies on the front nine and then bogeyed the par-4 11th hole to drop back to two-under. The junior birdied the par-3 13th and eagled the par-5 14th to get to five under before making back-to-back bogeys, but birdied the par-5 18th hole to finish with a back-nine 35.

Kline opened his round with a birdie and followed with a bogey before reeling off seven straight pars to make the turn at even-par 36.  He offset a bogey on No. 10 with birdies on the two back-nine par-5s to come in with a 35.

Gray made the turn at two-over 38 and used an eagle on the par-5 18th hole for a back-nine 35 and his 73.
