UCO in lead in Central Region Preview

The University of Central Oklahoma women’s golf team has a two-shot lead after the first round of the Central Region Preview at Prairie Highlands Golf Club in Olathe, Kan.

The Bronchos shot a 304 as a team. Makena Mucciaccio and Anna Pool each shot a 3-over-par 75 to tie for second. The final 18 holes are Wednesday.

"I’m pleased overall with the way we played our first round of the year," UCO head coach Michael Bond said.

Bond said the Bronchos will have to finish strong to stave off the competition. Augustana-South Dakota is only two strokes behind the Bronchos at 306.

Marla Souvannasing entered her junior season with a first-round 76. The two-time All-American is tied for seventh place.

Grace Shin shot a 6-over-par 78 and Sydney Roberts shot an 83.

Pool and Souvannasing led all golfers with four birdies each. The Bronchos tee off Wednesday beginning at 9:20 a.m.

Southwestern OSU is in fourth place with a score of  318. Elin Wahlin shot a 3-over 75 in the opening round of her sophomore season, leaving her tied with four other players in the field, one shot behind Pia Nunbhakdi of Arkansas Tech for the lead. Gloria Choi shot 78 (+6) in the first round to be tied for 13th place while SWOSU’s other three scores were in the 80’s. Chloe Thackeray (82) and Emily Folsom (83) rounded out the scoring and they are tied for 27th and 36th places, respectively, while Jenna Eidem is tied for 51st after shooting an 86. 

Northeastern State had an off day to start the season.  The RiverHawks opened with a 31-over-par round of 319 Tuesday to sit 15 strokes back of the leader.

Senior Baylee Price and sophomores Alexis Armon and Ebba Moberg are all part of a group tied for 17th at 7-over 79. Sophomore Kelsey Lumpkin shot 10-over 82 and is tied for 27th, while fellow sophomore Halie Wright shot 11-over 83 to position herself at T-36.
