UCO leads in windy Central Region Spring Preview

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (April 13) – Strong winds caused scores to soar, but Central Oklahoma still came out of first-day play with the team at the Central Region Spring Preview here Monday.

The Bronchos shot a 313 at the par-72 Rivercut Golf Course, good for a two-shot lead over Southwestern Oklahoma.  Missouri Western is third in the 18-team tournament at 319, followed by Northeastern State (319) and Augustana (324).

UCO, looking to nail down its eighth tournament title in 10 tries this season, begins final-round play at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

"It was a totally different golf course today than what we played in the practice round," head coach Michael Bond said.  "The wind was blowing 25 miles an hour out of the south yesterday (Sunday) and it was 25 out of the north today.  We didn’t play our best, but we’re in good position and need to have a solid round tomorrow."

Freshman standout Marla Souvannasing led the Bronchos with a 2-over-par 74 that has her tied for the individual lead with Margaret Musser of Southwestern Oklahoma. Katie Bensch was the only other UCO player under 80 at 78, while Bethany Darrough shot 80, Lindsey Bensch 81 and Dnaiela Martinez 84.

The Northeastern State women’s golf team sits in fourth place. The RiverHawks posted a 33-over-par 321 in Monday’s opening round and sit eight strokes back of the lead.
