UCO leads NSU by one stroke in MAIAA Championship at Alvamar

LAWRENCE, Kan. (April 20) — Only four players broke 80 on the first day of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Women’s Golf Championships here Monday and Central Oklahoma had two of those to grab a slim one-shot lead in the team race.

The two-time defending champion Bronchos got a 76 from Daniela Martinez and a 79 from Katie Bensch in windy conditions at the tough 6,012-yard, par-72 Alvamar Golf Club (Championship Course) in finishing with a 320 total, one stroke ahead of intrastate rival Northeastern State.

Lindenwood is third in the 10-team tourney at 331, following by Nebraska-Kearney (338) and Central Missouri (347).  Second-round play begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, with the final round set for Wednesday.

“It was a tough day with the way the wind was blowing and we made too many big numbers,” said head coach Michael Bond, whose team made four double bogeys and two triple bogeys.  “Daniela played really well before struggling some at the end and Katie had a good back nine for us.”

Martinez is second in the individual standings after her opening 76, just two shots behind NSU’s Baylee Price, and Bensch is fourth.

UCO also got an 81 from Marla Souvannasing, while Bethany Darrough shot 84 and Lindsey Bensch 86.

Martinez made the turn at one-over-par 37 and then opened the back nine with a birdie on the par-3 10th and eagle on the par-5 11th to get to two-under before giving six shots back the rest of the way.

K. Bensch started her day with a triple bogey en route to shooting a front-nine 41, but the senior bounced back with a two-over 38.

Northeastern State is one stroke back of the lead after an opening-round score of 33-over-par 321.

Sophomore Baylee Price, the defending individual champion, carded a 2-over 74 to sit atop the leaderboard. Junior Kayla Schroeder shot 6-over 78 to land in third place.

Freshman Alexis Armon is tied for 12th at 12-over 84, while junior Charter Lawson landed at T-16 following an opening-round score of 13-over 85. Freshman Fiona Hakanen is tied for 34th at 21-over 93.

The RiverHawks will begin teeing off on the back nine at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday.
