UCO men, women roll to titles

CAMDENTON, Mo. (Sept. 9) – Eric Kline polished off a dominating wire-to-wire individual win and Central Oklahoma prevailed in a playoff to capture the Lincoln Invitational crown here Tuesday.

Kline fired a one-under-par 70 in taking medalist honors by a whopping eight strokes, while the Bronchos closed with a 299 to finish the two-day, 54-hole event with an 863 total at the par-71 Old Kinderhook Golf Club.

UCO and Central Missouri were tied after regulation play, but the Bronchos won a one-hole playoff by two shots.  Northeastern State came in third in the 11-team tourney at 884, followed by Lindenwood (911) and Washburn (919).

The Bronchos also got a 71 from Logan Gray, while Wesley Jackson and Cody Troutman shot 79 and Russ Purser 82.

Kline led the field in pars (36) and eagles (two) while adding 10 birdies in running away with his second career title.  He played the par-5s in seven-under and was minus-two on the par-4s in finishing with an eight-under 205 total.

Gray tied for second at even-par 213 and UCO’s other three golfers all finished in the top 20, with Purser tying for 10th, Jackson tying for 15th and Troutman tying for 18th.

The Bronchos travel to Indianapolis, Ind. next Monday and Tuesday for the Brickyard Invitational.

OLATHE, Kan. (Sept. 9) – Senior Katie Bensch fired the best round of the day to rally for her first individual title and lead Central Oklahoma to the team championship in the season-opening Central Regional Preview here Tuesday.

The Bronchos closed with a 314 at the wind-swept Prairie Highlands Golf Club to finish with a two-day, 36-hole total of 608, nine shots ahead of runner-up Northeastern State.  Upper Iowa was third in the 12-team field at 620, followed by Arkansas Tech (623) and Southwestern Oklahoma (626).

It was the seventh tournament title in the last 13 outings for UCO, which won six of 12 events in 2013-14 en route to a best-ever sixth-place finish in the NCAA Division II national tournament.

Bensch shot a one-over-par 73 to finish at three-over-par 147 in sharing medalist honors with SWOSU’s Ana Gomez.

The Bronchos also got a 78 from Tressa Brumley, while Bethany Darrough shot 81, Marla Souvannasing 82 and Daniela Martinez an 83 as the scoring average soared due to the high wins.  June Tigert had an 81 competing as an individual.

All six UCO players finished in the top 20, with Souvannasing coming in 12th, Darrough and Tigert tying for 13th and Brumley and Martinez tying for 18th.

"It was a lot tougher today with the wind, but Katie stepped up and played a great round to carry us," head coach Michael Bond said.  "It’s a good way to start the year and hopefully we can learn from some of the mistakes we made."

The Bronchos go to Tahlequah, Okla. for the NSU Golf Classic next Monday and Tuesday.
