UCO third, NSU sixth at Shangri-La

MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. – The Northeastern State men’s golf team sits sixth after the first two rounds of the MSSU Men’s Fall Invitational, which is being contested at the par-72, 7,211-yard Shangri-La Country Club.

The first event of the season is one of four MIAA-sanctioned tournaments in 2015-16. The results from the event will be used to help determine the conference champion in April.

The RiverHawks carded scores of 307 and 299 Monday to shoot 30-over-par 606. They sit 28 strokes behind leader and No. 5-ranked Central Missouri, who shot 2-over 578 (286-292).

Host Missouri Southern State is second at 7-over 583 (294-289), while No. 11 Central Oklahoma is third at 12-over 588 (297-291). Lindenwood (299-293=592) and Washburn (309-295=604) rounded out the top five after the first day of competition.

Junior Tate Williamson paced the RiverHawks with his 2-under 142 (71-71) effort. He is in solo third place.

NSU’s lineup featured three new faces, led by redshirt freshman Justin Allenback who shot 9-over 153 (79-74) to land in solo 28th. Junior Tayler Morse-Cherry is tied for 31st at 11-over 155 (78-77), and redshirt freshman Casey Paul is tied for 54th at 21-over 165 (83-82).

Senior veteran Brent Williamson is tied for 35th after carding a 12-over 156 (79-77).

UCM’s Alex Springer leads the field after firing a 5-under 139 (69-70). The final round will be contested Tuesday.
