UCO wins Central Spring Region Preview by seven, NSU fourth

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (April 14) – Another tournament, another win for Central Oklahoma.

The Bronchos captured their eighth title in 10 events at the Central Spring Region Preview here Tuesday, claiming a seven-stroke victory after closing with a final-round 309.

UCO finished two trips around the par-72 Rivercut Golf Club with a 622 total in its final tune-up before next week’s Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships.  Augustana was second in the 18-team field at 629, followed by Concordia-St. Paul (637), Arkansas Tech (642) and Northeastern State (642).

Katie Bensch shot one-under-par 35 on the back nine to rally for a 75 in leading the Bronchos, while Daniela Martinez shot 76, Marla Souvannasing and Lindsey Bensch 79 and Bethany Darrough 82.

“We started off good and then played poorly during a stretch on the back nine, but managed to hang in there” head coach Michael Bond said.  “It was good to get another win and we just want to keep working hard at getting better every time we step on the course.”

K. Bensch and Souvannasing tied for fourth in the individual standings at 153, with Martinez and L. Bensch tying for 16th.

Northeastern State finished in a tie for fourth place. The RiverHawks posted identical scores of 321 in both Monday and Tuesday’s rounds to finish at 66-over 642.

Sophomore Baylee Price led the way for the RiverHawks. She finished locked in a tie for fourth place after posting a 9-over 153. This was the third tournament in a row that Price finished in the top-five.

Junior Charter Lawson carded a 15-over 159 and tied for 14th place. Junior Kayla Schroeder finished T-33 after finishing at 20-over 164 while freshmen Fiona Hakanen and Alexis Armon finished in a tie for 54th after posting scores of 26-over 170.

Northeastern State will next compete at the 2015 MIAA Championship in Lawrence, Kansas. The tournament will be held April 20-22 at the Alvamar Golf Course.
