UCO women lead, NSU second, Niedy, Price, Tigert lead individual race

LAWRENCE, Kan. (April 21) – Taylor Neidy and June Tigert were two of just three players to break 80 in leading Central Oklahoma into the lead after the opening day of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Women’s Golf Championships here Monday.

The defending champion Bronchos finished with a 320 at the 6,237-yard, par-72 Alvamar Golf Club, good for a six-shot lead of Northeastern State.  Lindenwood is another 19 shots back in third in the nine-team, 54-hole tourney, which continues Tuesday and concludes Wednesday.

Neidy led the way with a 76 that has her in the individual lead by three strokes over Tigert and NSU’s Baylee Price, who where the only other golfers in the 45-player field to shoot in the 70s.  UCO also got an 82 from Katie Bensch, while Bethany Darrough shot 83 and Aly Seng 85.

Neidy birdied her first hole of the day and then bogeyed No. 8 in making the turn at even-par 36 before coming in with a back-nine 40.  Tigert shot 41 on the front nine and rallied with a back-nine 38 for her 79.

Northeastern State sits in second place after a 38-over-par 326 and landed six shots behind No. 13 Central Oklahoma (320). NSU gained a 19-stroke lead over third-place Lindenwood (345), while Northwest Missouri State (352) and Nebraska-Kearney (357) rounded out the top five

Freshman Baylee Price bogeyed four of her final five holes to slip into a second-place tie with UCO’s June Tigert at 7-over 79. Fellow Broncho Taylor Neidy leads the field after carding a 4-over 76.

Junior Arizona Chin and freshman Sofia Castiello found themselves in a three-way tie for fourth with Lindenwood’s Julieta Rotzinger at 8-over 80. Chin shot 1-under in her final four holes of the day.

Sophomore Kayla Schroeder closed with just two bogeys in her final six holes to shoot 15-over 87 and sit in solo 15th, while junior Brooke Allison is tied for 28th at 23-over 95.

Northeastern State will be joined by UCO and Lindenwood in the final groups that will begin teeing off in Tuesday’s second round at 10:30 a.m.
