FAR HILLS, N.J. (May 15, 2014) – The United States Golf Association announced today that Kevin Sutherland has accepted a special exemption from qualifying for the 2014 U.S. Senior Open Championship, which will be played at Oak Tree National, in Edmond, Okla., July 10-13.

“I am honored and excited that the USGA has extended me an exemption to play in this year’s U.S. Senior Open,” said Sutherland, who will make his first start as a Champions Tour professional at Oak Tree National. “I am proud of what I have accomplished on the PGA Tour and this is an acknowledgement of how I have played.”

Sutherland, who has competed on the PGA Tour since 1992, will be eligible for the U.S. Senior Open for the first time when he turns age 50 on July 4.

Sutherland has played in 12 USGA championships, including nine U.S. Opens, two U.S. Amateur Public Links and one U.S. Amateur. He shot rounds of 66-67 to earn medalist honors at last year’s U.S. Open sectional qualifying in Memphis, Tenn. At age 48, he went on to tie for 67th in the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Sutherland will attempt to qualify for the 2014 U.S. Open on June 2. He is locally exempt and is entered in the Daly City, Calif., sectional qualifier.

A native of Sacramento, Calif., Sutherland was a two-time All-America player at Fresno State University. He won the 2002 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, defeating Scott McCarron, 1 up, in the final. His best major-championship result is a tie for ninth in both the 2001 British Open and the 2007 PGA Championship. His best finish in a U.S. Open is a tie for 28th at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club in 2003.

The USGA most recently offered a special exemption for the U.S. Senior Open to amateur Randal Lewis in 2012.
