Colleges: OSU wins Cabo Collegiate; OU rallies; TU second in SC; Cowgirls fifth in Las Vegas
LOS CABOS, Mexico – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team erased a three-shot deficit during the final round of the Cabo Collegiate on Tuesday to win the event for the fourth time, doing so at Twin Dolphin Club.
For the Cowboys, it was their second win of the season and first of the spring. It was OSU’s first win at the event since 2019. The Cowboys also won in Cabo in 2017 and 2018.
OSU trailed Arkansas heading into the final round at the par-71-, 7,170-yard layout before firing a 276 to clip the Razorbacks by a shot. The Cowboys finished at 22-under 830.
Individually, junior Preston Stout logged his fourth career victory and was medalist at the event for the second year in a row. After sharing the top spot last year, Stout ran away from the field this year, posting a closing 68 to finish at 15-under 198 and seven shots clear of the field.
With the win, Stout earned an exemption into the field at the PGA Tour’s World Wide Technology Championship in November.
Gaven Lane fired a 66 to move up 28 spots into a tie for 17th place at 212. The junior birdied the 12th and 13th before making the event’s first-ever hole-in-one at the 14th before adding another birdie at the 15th.
Junior Eric Lee closed with a 74 to finish at 214 and tied for 25th place. Classmate Ethan Fang also finished at 214 after signing for a 73 on Tuesday.
Sophomore Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson climbed 15 spots into a tie for 30th place with a closing 69 to finish at 215.
OSU will be back in action on March 16 when they travel to California for the Pauma Valley Invitational.
Cowan, Maybank III post top 15 finishes as Sooners rally
LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma men’s golf posted the second-lowest combined score over the final 36 holes but couldn’t fully recover from a difficult opening round, finishing sixth Tuesday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate.
The 14th-ranked Sooners (6th, +4) opened the 54-hole tournament at Southern Highlands Golf Club with a 10-over 298 on Sunday and sat last in the 15-team field. Oklahoma surged up the leaderboard over the final two rounds, highlighted by a 6-under 282 in Monday’s second round, the second-lowest score of the day, before closing with an even-par 288 on Tuesday to finish sixth.
Two Sooners, Ryder Cowan and PJ Maybank III, recorded top-15 finishes in a field that featured eight ranked teams, including the nation’s top four in the latest Clippd rankings. The tournament also included 35 of the nation’s top-100 players.
Cowan paced Oklahoma, carding rounds of 75-70-69 to finish tied for 13th at 2-under par. The junior All-American now has five top-20 finishes in six events this season and 19 in 31 career tournaments.
Maybank tied for 14th at 1-under after rounds of 75-67-73. The Cheboygan, Mich., native opened the spring with a T9 finish at the Puerto Rico Classic and now owns three top-20 finishes this season.
Clark Van Gaalen (+5) tied for 37th, while freshman Coltrane Mittag (T58, +10) and Jase Summy (T67, +12) rounded out the Oklahoma lineup.
Texas’ Christian Maas won medalist honors at 10-under par, edging Virginia’s Josh Duangmanee (-9) and Auburn’s Jackson Koivun (-8).
Cowgirls place fifth in Lady Luck Invitational
LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma State women’s golf wrapped up competition at the Lady Luck Invitational on Tuesday, ending the tournament in fifth place.
The third and final round marked the Cowgirls’ best of the week, combining to shoot an even-par 288 and bring Oklahoma State’s total score to 894 (+30), finishing 28 strokes behind first-place UCF and 15 behind runner-up Kent State.
This marks OSU’s sixth top-five team finish through eight tournaments this season.
Marta Silchenko was the Cowgirls’ top individual, earning her fourth top-10 finish through six events this season. The junior shot 76-72-72—220 (+4) to finish in a tie for 10th place. Silchenko has now earned back-to-back top-10 finishes since making her spring debut last week in Jacksonville.
Summer Lee joined Silchenko with an even-par 72 of her own to earn a share of 19th place. The sophomore from Plano, Texas, now boasts three top-20 finishes this season.
True freshman Yu-Chu Chen carded the Cowgirls’ lowest round of the day, firing a 1-under 71. The under-par effort led Chen to a 14-spot jump on the individual leaderboard, finishing tied for 26th. The Kaohsiung, Taiwan, native was one of just eight golfers to shoot under par on Tuesday.
Ellie Bushnell accompanied Chen in 26th place after posting an 81-72-73—226 (+10) scorecard.
Grace Kilcrease saved her best round for last, adding a 73 (+1). The senior tied for 46th at 18-over. Lucy Darr competed as an individual, going 21-over on the week.
The Cowgirls return to action in two weeks at the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. The event marks the first of three straight trips to the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex for the Pokes.
Tulsa nabs second place in Annika More Than Golf Invitational
AIKEN, S.C. – The Tulsa women’s golf team earned its fourth top-five finish of the season as it finished runner-up at the Annika More Than Golf Invitational. The Golden Hurricane shot 26-over par 902 for the runner-up finish. This is the second straight top-five finish for TU.
Columbia shot the best round of the tournament in the final round to win the event. Columbia shot 16-over par 892 at the event.
The Golden Hurricane had three players finish in the top ten of the event. Leading the Golden Hurricane was Samantha Olson. She shot one-under par 72 on the final day and earned a tied-for-third-place finish. She was one over par for the tournament. She fired two rounds at par or better over the 54-hole event. This is her third straight top-five finish.
Allyn Stephens earned her first top-five finish of the season as she finished in fifth place. She shot a round of even-par 73 on the final day, which was her second round at par or better at the More Than Golf Invite.
Jenni Roller finished tied for seventh, her fourth top-ten result this season, shooting seven-over par 226.
Zoe Shamy and Ramaine Masserey rounded out the TU tournament field. Shamy shot 15-over 234 to tie for 27th; Masserey shot 18-over 237 to tie for 37th.
Tulsa returns to action on Monday, March 9, when they head to Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., to participate in the GameAbove Sports Invitational. The event will be held at Rolling Hills Country Club.
Oral Roberts takes sixth in Daniel Island Invitational
DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. – The ORU women’s golf program participated in the Daniel Island Invitational from March 2-3 in Daniel Island, S.C. at the Daniel Island Club. Three Golden Eagles placed in the top 30 as ORU placed sixth out of 15 teams.
The Daniel Island Club is a par-72 course that plays 6,166 yards. The average score over the three-round tournament was 75.50.
As a team, ORU shot 298-292-290 and finished sixteen-over par. High Point claimed the team title, shooting even par on the week (294-286-284). Marie Madsen took home the individual title, shooting seven under par (70-71-68).
Anna Swan placed 11th, shooting 71-73-72 to finish the Daniel Island Invitational at even-par.
Avery Blake finished four shots back of Swan, putting together rounds of 72-74-74 to finish the week at four-over par, securing a T18 finish.
Freshman, Khloe Jones, shot 79-72-73 (+8), closing out the Daniel Island Invitational tied for 29th.
Lydia Swan carded rounds of 81-74-71, finishing T41. Swan’s third round 71 was one of two rounds under par by the Golden Eagles.
Jayla Kucy finished at twelve-over par, shooting 76-73-79.
