Dalke, Bryan, Creel advance in U.S. Open qualifier at Oak Tree National
Future University of Oklahoma player Brad Dalke and former Sooner player and later assistant coach Phillip Bryan grabbed two of the three qualifying spots available Tuesday at the U.S. Open local qualifying tournament at Oak Tree National.
Dalke, who famously committed to OU as a pre-teen and recently defeated Rory McIlroy in an arm-wrestling match, shot 1-under par 70 to match Bryan and former University of Central Oklahoma golfer Joshua Creel, who now makes his home in Cheyenne, Wyo.
Alternates who shot even-par 71 are former Southern Nazarene golfer Blake Trimble of Houtston and Danny Lovell of Dallas.
Bryan still competes as a professional in area pro-ams and mini-tour events, but works in commercial insurance. He graduated from OU in 2008 and served as an assistant coach in 2009. This is his second time to advance to sectional qualifying as he shot an identical score of 1-under at Oak Tree National three years ago.
"I bogeyed the first hole and thought I was going to shoot 80," Bryan said. "From there I hit 16 greens and made a couple of birdie putts. It was a good solid round. All these young kids hit it so far now that I didn’t know if I could keep up."
Bryan, 30, will go to Columbus, Ohio, for sectional qualifying in the field with the pros coming off The Memorial. There will be more spots open than in a typical sectional but also a tougher field vying for those spots.
"It’s my dream to play a round with Paul Goydos," Bryan said. "He hits it as short as I do."
The U.S. Open is June 18-21 at Chambers Bay Golf Course. Complete results follow.
