Edmond North’s Eckroat fires 63 in Scott Robertson Memorial at Roanoke Country Club
His name is Austin Eckroat. And, boy, did he grab the 32nd Scott Robertson Memorial’s featured boys 15-18 division by the throat Saturday.
Eckroat, a 16-year-old Oklahoman playing his first Robertson, bagged nine birdies en route to a second-round 8-under-par 63 to take a commanding six-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round at Roanoke Country Club.
“It’s the first time I’ve been here, and I really like the layout of this course,” said Eckroat, who birdied three of the final four holes to increase his cushion on the field.
“Every hole sets up well for my tee ball. I hit a draw and the greens are a really good speed … not too fast, not too slow. I like it a lot around here.”
After opening with a lead-sharing 68 on Friday, Eckroat posted nines of 31-32 to match the older boys division record of 63 that was posted by Ben Balter in 2012. Current PGA Tour pro Brendon Todd shot 63, too, but the modified course at the time was a par-70.
In a couple of tours of RCC’s Redbud and Dogwood nines, Eckroat has birdied 15 of 36 holes. How strong is that? Try 41.6 percent.
