Mabrey, Staggs lead TU to one-shot victory
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The University of Tulsa Men’s golf team won the 2015 UALR/First Tee Collegiate Classic with a team total of 866, beating American Conference foe Memphis by one stroke. The Hurricane’s victory came behind individual medalist honors for senior Matt Mabrey who won the tournament after turning in a three-round total of 210, finishing 6-under par.
This was Tulsa’s first team title since the 2010-11 season when the team won the National Invitational on March 22.
Mabrey jumped five spots on Tuesday after carding a 68 in the last round of action. Mabrey’s only other tournament win was his medalist honors at last year’s Conference USA Championship.
Fellow senior Colton Staggs turned in a 74 Tuesday, slipping out of the top-spot that he occupied after the first two rounds. His 212 score put him just two strokes behind his teammate and just one stroke behind two golfers who tied for second-place.
Francisco Yanez finish the tournament with 223 earning him a share of 35th-place, his best finish so far this season. Sebastian Smith also earned his best finish of the season, coming in tied for 42nd-place with a 225 total. Matthew Marquez was three strokes back from his teammate at 228.
After the Tigers, who took home second with 867, Louisiana-Monroe came in third at 878 followed by the host Arkansas-Little Rock (877) and McNeese State (885) filled out the top-five team finishers.
Next up the Hurricane will be back at it in Kannapolis, N.C. at the Irish Creek Collegiate April 11-12 in their last tournament before the American Championships.
