Sooners in 10th in San Antonio, need final-round rally for NCAA berth
The University of Oklahoma women’s golf team completed Friday’s second round of the NCAA San Antonio Regional in 10th place. The 18-team field is playing at the par-72, 6,350-yard Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
The No. 14 seed Sooners, who are the only unranked squad in the top 13 on the leaderboard, carded a 293 (+5) on the day for a two-round 581 (+5). No. 4 seed Tennessee leads the event with a 557 (-19), while No. 6 seed Baylor is in second at 561 (-15) and No. 2 seed Washington in third at -14.
Freshman Rylee Pedigo led the Sooners in the round, firing a collegiate-best 3-under 69 (previous best was a 72). Pedigo finished the front nine at -1 before registering birdies on holes 16 and 17. She is tied for 38th place at 145 (+1).
OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said she was proud of the first-year Sooner.
“Rylee played really solid today,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “She’s been working so hard this spring and to see it pay off at regionals is fantastic.”
Fellow OU freshman Hannah Wood shares 38th place with Pedigo after logging a day-two 74 (+2). Wood posted a 71 (-1) in the opening round.
Oklahoma freshmen Valerie Tanguay and Ana Ruiz and sophomore Alexandra Kaui all shot a second-round 75 (+3). Tanguay recorded a 71 (-1) in her opening round and is tied for 48th place at 146 (+2). Kaui is tied for 53rd place at 147 (+3) and Ruiz shares 61st with a 149 (+5).
“We played fine today. We are right there and have one more round to play,” Drouin-Luttrell said. “We are actually lucky to have finished playing before the stoppage due to inclement weather. Being able to finish before that delay late in the day was huge for us.”
The NCAA San Antonio Regional is one of four 54-hole preliminary events for the NCAA Championships finals. The low six teams and low three individuals not on an advancing team from each regional will move on to the NCAA finals, which will be held May 22-27 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
The Sooners will tee off in Saturday’s third and final round at 7:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring and results are available at GolfStat.com.
