Stars finish eighth in NAIA Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Oklahoma City University ended the NAIA men’s golf championships in a tie for eighth place Friday at the LPGA International Hills Course.

Anthony Marchesani and Garrison Mendoza led the Stars by tying for 23rd place. Second-ranked OCU posted a team score of 289-299-291-292–1,171 on the par-72, 6,947-yard course.

Marchesani turned in scores of 74-73-70-75–292. Marchesani, a junior from Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, sank birdies on the par-5, 561-yard second hole, par-5, 531-yard 14th hole and the par-4, 420-yard 18th hole. He finished the week with 15 birdies. 

Mendoza produced a 71-75-71-75–292. Mendoza, a sophomore from Clinton, dropped in birdies on No. 2 and the par-5, 532-yard eighth hole to end the tournament with nine birdies.

Oklahoma City’s Matthew Cheung drained four birdies in a row to finish his front nine. The holes he birdied were the par-4, 406-yard sixth hole, par-3, 195-yard seventh hole, par-5, 532-yard eighth hole and the par-4, 410-yard No. 9. Cheung, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, shot 74-74-78-70–296.
