Stars hold second-round lead in SAC men’s golf championships

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University pieced together a six-stroke lead through 36 holes in the Sooner Athletic Conference men’s golf championships Monday at Twin Hills Golf & Country Club.

Oklahoma City, ranked second in the NAIA, carded scores of 282-290-572. Anthony Marchesani, a junior from Rosebud, Victoria, Australia, led the Stars with a 75-69-144, good for a tie for fifth place.

Sixth-ranked Wayland Baptist (Texas), the defending SAC champion, piled up a 286-292-578, and eighth-ranked Texas Wesleyan produced a 290-289-579 on the par-72, 6,905-yard layout. No. 17 Oklahoma Baptist shot a fourth-place 292-295-587.

Wayland Baptist’s Ryan Connelly held the first-day lead among the individuals at 69-71-140, while Zach Oliver from Oklahoma Baptist stood second with a 72-71-143. Marchesani held onto a share of third along with Drew Posada of OBU and Colby Webb of Texas Wesleyan.

The rest of OCU’s team tied for sixth. The Stars’ Matthew Cheung, a sophomore from Brisbane, Australia, fired a 70-75-145, while Garrison Mendoza, a sophomore from Clinton, Okla., posted a 68-77-145. Sam Russell, a senior from Eastbourne, East Sussex, England, registered a 70-75-145, and Jamie Warman, a junior from Perth, Western Australia, Australia, turned in a 74-71-145 for Oklahoma City.

OCU individuals were Issa Abou el Ella, who shot 79-71-150, and Scott Verplank, who had a 75-80-155.

At around tee time, the temperature read 46 degrees and rose to 65. Winds ranged from 7-12 mph and gusted up to 20 mph.
