Summy ties for medalist as Sooners finish one shot back at Boilermaker Invitational
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Sooner freshman golfer Jase Summy fired a 66 (-5) in the final round of the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday to share medalist honors and notch the first win of his college career.
Powered by Summy’s strong play at the two-day, 54-hole event, the 11th-ranked Sooners (2, -29) erased an eight-shot deficit held by host school Purdue (1, -30) to take a late lead before the Boilermakers came from behind to win by a stroke at Ackerman-Allen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
The runner-up finish marked the close of Oklahoma’s regular season as the Sooners tallied three team titles, two individual titles and two second-place finishes. The successful campaign marked the sixth consecutive season that head coach Ryan Hybl’s team won at least three events. A dominant, record-breaking performance at the Big 12 Match Play Championship and a win in the Sooner/Aggie match in the spring were highlights of the year to date.
Summy (T1, -11) was sensational across Saturday’s 36 holes. He opened with a 67 (-4) in the morning with only one bogey on the card and followed that with a 66 (-5) highlighted by seven birdies. The Keller, Texas, product was a consensus top-10 prospect upon his arrival in Norman and he met expectations in his first year. The freshman will enter his first postseason with one win, three top-fives and 11 rounds in the 60s.
Second on the Sooners’ scorecard was veteran Patrick Welch (3, -10), who finished in solo third in the last regular season event of his illustrious career. The Aliso Viejo, Calif., product used six birdies over an eight-hole stretch, along with an eagle and two more late birdies to sign for a field-low 64 (-7) in the final round.
Ben Lorenz, fresh off his first college win at The Goodwin, continued to play his best golf. The junior used a final-round 69 (-2) to secure 10th place, his third consecutive top-10 finish this spring.
Drew Goodman was strong in the afternoon wave, carding a 4-under 67 to end play in 14th. The sophomore posted five birdies on the back nine to surge up the leaderboard.
Stephen Campbell Jr. rallied for a 2-under 69 on Saturday afternoon to earn a share of 17th place. The top-20 finish was the seventh of his season and sixth in his last seven events.
Playing unattached, Jaxon Dowell (T17, -1) shared 17th with Campbell Jr. behind a 67 (-5) in the morning wave. Jake Holbrook finished in a tie for 22nd at 213 (E).
The seven Sooners inside the top 25 were the most for Oklahoma in a 75-person field this season.
Next, Oklahoma prepares to defend its Big 12 crown as the Sooners head to Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan., for the three-day event slated for April 24-26. Following that, Oklahoma will host an NCAA Regional at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, May 15-17, for the second straight year.
