Austin brothers win rain-shortened OGA Four-Ball, Valuck-Reid claim senior title

For brothers John and Mark Austin, a long, delayed drive from Norman to Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow resulted in no golf, but a championship.

The brothers were nearing Cedar Ridge for their tee time, which had been delayed by rain, when they were informed the second round of the Oklahoma Golf Association Four-Ball Champiopnship had been canceled by persistent rain and storms. That made their first-round 5-under 66 stand up for a one-shot victory over Max Showalter and Tyler Hall.

John Austin, 46, had previously combined with Tripp Davis to win the OGA Four-Ball, but it was the first victory for Mark, 42. They each had three birdies in Monday’s round.

OGA veterans Jon Valuck and James Reid shot a 4-under 67 to win the Senior Four-Ball by one shot over Ken Kee and Richard Koenig. Tied for third were Michael Alsup and Brad Nelligan along with Mike Hughett and Eric Mueller at 69.

Reid and Valuck combined for five birdies and one bogey. Valuck had four of the birdies, including the winning one on the par-4 18th when he hit his approach to within four feet. Reid’s crucial birdie on the par-4 16th put the team in position.

"It was only about a 30-foot putt with three feet of break in it," Valuck said.

Reid won his sixth OGA event, having won the OGA Mid-Amateur twice, the OGA Four-Ball twice and this was his second victory in the OGA Senior Four Ball.

Both Valuck and Reid are from the Oklahoma City area and said it was strange to be playing Monday after learning of the devastating tornado in Moore. Ironically, one of Reid’s Mid-Amateur wins came on Sept. 11, 2001.
