Baumgartner, Cowboys come out swinging in Pauma Valley

PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team posted a 36-hole total of 556 on Monday during the first day of action at the Pauma Valley Invitational to stand in second place at Pauma Valley Country Club.

The Cowboys opened with a 5-under 279 at the par-71, 7,311-yard layout to share second place with San Diego and finish the first round five shots off the pace of Vanderbilt. OSU followed with a 7-under 277 to cut the deficit to three shots with its 12-under 556 total.

One group in the field did not finish their second round and will do so tomorrow morning prior to the start of the final round.

Senior Jonas Baumgartner carded a bogey-free 68 to share third place after the opening round. His opening nine consisted of eight pars and a birdie to go out in 1-under 35, while he followed with a birdie at the 10th and 17th to go with seven pars on his second nine.

Baumgartner fired a 5-under 66 during the afternoon round to stand at 8-under 134 and two shots clear of the field. During his second round, Baumgartner blistered the front nine, carding five consecutive birdies from Nos. 3-7 for an outward side of 31. After a birdie at the 11th, he carded bogeys at the 12th and 13th before posting another birdie at the 18th for an even-par 35.

Fifth year Rayhan Thomas followed an opening 71 with a 3-under 68 to climb 15 spots into a tie for sixth place at 139  to join Baumgartner inside the top 10.

Freshman Preston Stout moved up nine spots during his second round with a 69. He posted an opening 71 and is tied for 12th place at 140.

Senior Bo Jin opened with a 69 before posting a 74 to stand at 143 and tied for 30th place.

Freshman Gaven Lane opened with a 72 to stand in a tie for 35th place before carding a 76 to finish the day tied for 63rd at 148.

A pair of Cowboys are competing individually, with sophomore John Wild carding rounds of 77 and 74 to finish the day tied for 76th place at 151.

Freshman Johnnie Clark signed for scores of 80 and 77 to stand in 84th place at 157.
