The 2024 PGA tour is in full gear, with eight tournaments already in the books. There are 36 total PGA Tour tournaments in the schedule, down from 44 last season, and nearly all of them have a winner’s share north of $1 million. Among the most intriguing storylines each year are the different purse sizes, and with the PGA Tour battling LIV Golf, these purses have become vital in keeping the best competition on the PGA Tour. Today, we’ll look at some of the calendar’s signature events and the biggest projected purses.

The Players Championship | Winner’s Share: $4.5 Million

We could have gone in various directions with this topic, including the Waste Management Phoenix Open, known as the Greatest Show On Grass. The tournament is the best golf party in the world. However, we stayed tame with tournaments like the Players Championship. This tournament is unique because the PGA owns it, meaning it isn’t an event on other tours. It isn’t a major but is regarded as one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf and is one of the PGA Tour signature events.

The Players Championship has often featured the most oversized purse on the calendar and currently holds the biggest purse on the 2024 slate, with a $25 million prize fund. The 50th anniversary tournament boasts a winner’s share of $4.5 million, the largest in the field. Hosted at the renowned TPC at Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, The Players Championship is the home of the iconic par-3 “Island Green” on hole 17.

U.S. Open | Winner’s Share: $3.6 million

The only major on our list, the United States Open Championship, is the third of four major golf championships on the calendar, taking place every June. The qualifying sites have already been determined between April 22 and May 20. Established in 1995, the U.S. Open gives away a $20 million purse, the largest of the four major championships, and is hosted by the United States Golf Association. It is the oldest major championship played in the United States, but despite its massive purse, it has much fewer sponsors than the PGA Championship. Aside from the Masters, the U.S. Open is arguably the most watched golf tournament on the calendar.

Each year, the tournament rotates locations. In 2024, Course No. 2 at the world-renowned Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in the Village of Pinehurst, North Carolina, will host the famed event. Pinehurst has hosted four U.S. Open championships and 10 USGA championships.

Arnold Palmer Invitational | Winner’s Share: $4 million

Hosted in Bay Hill, Florida, the Arnold Palmer Invitational is one of just five tournaments on the tour with “invitational” status, meaning it has a reduced field of just 120 players. The invitational, named after The King, takes place at Bay Hill Club and Lounge, a private golf club resort owned by Arnold Palmer until he died in 2016. The winner has received a red cardigan sweater in memory of Palmer since his death.

Since the invitational bears one of the sport’s all-time greats, it carries a level of prestige matched by its whopping $4 million winner’s purse.

What Other Signature PGA Tour Events Are on the Calendar?

Along with the events listed, fans can also look forward to the three other major championships (The Masters, The PGA Championship, and the British Open) and the remaining evevated events including the RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, The Memorial and The Travelers Championship.
