HOUSTON (Feb. 13) – Nick Canales rode a torrid finish to a two-under-par 70 and Jordan Wilson added an even-par 72 in leading Central Oklahoma to a runner-up showing at the season-opening Houston Classic Tuesday.

The Bronchos closed with a 288 to finish three trips around the 6,945-yard, par-72 Golf Club of Houston with an 888 total, five strokes behind winner Midwestern State. Henderson State was third in the 15-tournament tournament at 894, followed by Oklahoma Christian (900) and West Texas A&M (904).

Canales was four-under over his last six holes in rallying for the 70, while Wilson’s 72 enabled the UCO newcomer to finish second in the individual standings. Bennett Baldwin and Ross Taylor both shot 73, Baylor Bostick had an 80 and Evan Griffith shot 77 competing as a medalist.

“We didn’t have a good putting day, but played well overall,” head coach Derrick Thompson said. “We just didn’t make enough birdies today. It’s a good start to the spring for us and something we can build on.”

Wilson shot a one-over 37 on the front nine, got to one-under with birdies on Nos. 10 and 14 and followed with three straight pars before bogeying No. 18 to drop back to even. The Oklahoma State transfer ended the 54-hole tourney with an even-par 216 total in finishing four shots behind winner Seth Bearden of MSU.

Canales started his final round on No. 2 and was two-over after 13 holes before finishing with a flourish. The redshirt freshman birdied Nos. 14, 15, 17 and 1 to complete the two-under round and tied for 12th in the standings with a 222 total.

Baldwin was two-under after 13 holes, but dropped three shots the rest of the way in coming in with a one-over 73. The junior tied for 18th at 224.

The Bronchos don’t play again until going to Fort Smith, Ark. March 4-5 for the Hardscrabble Invitational.
