Cowboys go deep in first round at Cabo Collegiate
SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team opened play on Sunday at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate with a 276 tally to stand alone atop the leaderboard at Querencia Golf Club.
The top-ranked Cowboys, who won the event a year ago, used their 8-under score to hold a five-shot lead over California at the par-71, 6,898-yard layout. Arizona State posted a 1-over 285 to finish the day in third place.
Matthew Wolff was one of two Cowboys to log a sub-70 round on the day, firing a 65 to lead by one. The freshman began his day on the seventh hole with a birdie before carding his lone bogey of the day at the eighth. Wolff answered with a birdie at the ninth.
After beginning his back nine with four consecutive pars, he birdied Nos. 14 and 15 before adding another birdie at the 18th for a 3-under 32 side. Wolff recorded pars on the first three holes of his front side before posting two more birdies at the fifth and sixth for a 3-under 33 on his outward nine.
Sophomore Viktor Hovland totaled six birdies during his opening round on his way to a 3-under 68 to stand in a tie for third place.
Freshman Austin Eckroat posted an even-par 71 to finish in a tie for 15th place.
Junior Zach Bauchou and senior Kristoffer Ventura were a stroke off the pace of Eckroat, carding 72s to stand in a tie for 26th place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. (MST) and will be grouped with Houston, Rice and Florida State. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
