Cowboys, Sooners move on the NCAA semifinals
Oklahoma State and Oklahoma both moved on to the NCAA Championship match play semifinals with victories in the quarterfinals Tuesday morning, setting up a potential Bedlam championship match Wednesday if they can get past their semifinal opponents Tuesday afternoon.
That will not be easy. Oklahoma, which defeated Illinois 3-2, faces No. 1 seed Arizona State playing on its home course, while Oklahoma State, a 4-1 winner over Vanderbilt, will face red-hot Pepperdine. Live scoring is on www.golfstat.com with live coverage on The Golf Channel.
“We’re going to stick to our game plan, which is fairways and greens,” OU coach Ryan Hybl said. “We’re ready for the challenge this afternoon.”
OU senior Quade Cummins capped off the win with a 2 and 1 victory over Tommy Kuhl. It was the deciding match, as earlier Jonathan Brightwell had defeated Giovanni Tadiotto 3 and 1 and Logan McAllister defeated Jerry Ji 2 and 1. OU’s Patrick Welch is still not himself and was whipsawed 8 & 6 by Adrien Dumont de Chassert, while OU’s Ben Lorenz lost to Michael Feagles 4 and 3.
The Cowboys had earlier rolled past seventh-seeded Vanderbilt as Austin Eckroat, Bo Jin, Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra and Brian Stark each won their matches, with only Aman Gupta falling 1 up to Reid Davenport.
Arizona State defeated North Carolina 3-1-1 while Pepperdine won 3-1-1 over Florida State, which got its lone victory from top-ranked collegian John Pak.
