RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. – Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team opened play at the NCAA Rancho Santa Fe Regional on Monday with a 278 team score to stand in second place at The Farms Golf Club. The Oklahoma Sooners were in fourth place at 284.

The fifth-seeded Cowboys’ 2-under tally put them just a shot off the pace of North Florida at the par-70, 6,962-yard layout.

The event is one of six 54-hole regional tournaments being conducted around the country. The top five teams and low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 24-29 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

Fifth year Rayhan Thomas paced the OSU starting five, firing a 3-under 67 to stand alone in second place and a shot behind California’s Sampson Zheng.

Thomas opened with a bogey at the 10th hole before carding birdies at the 12th, 14th and 16th before posting a bogey at the 17th for a 1-under 34 opening nine. He would card four consecutive pars to open his second nine before reeling off three birdies in four holes on his way to a 2-under 33.

Senior Jonas Baumgartner carded three birdies during his opening round to sign for a 1-under 69, tying him for sixth place.

Freshman Preston Stout and senior Bo Jin each carded 71s to stand in a tie for 13th place.

Freshman Gaven Lane was a stroke back with an opening 72 to share 26th place.

The Cowboys will begin their second round tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. (PST) and will be grouped with North Florida and California.

Ben Lorenz and Jase Summy fired 1-under-par rounds for the No. 15 Sooners. The pair were two of just 10 golfers in the field to score in the red Monday.

Oklahoma signed for a 284 at the par-70 course and will enter Tuesday’s second round one shot above the cut line.

The third-seeded Sooners trail leaders sixth-seeded North Florida (1, -3) by seven strokes as the leaderboard is tight, with eight teams within 13 shots of the lead. Cal’s Sampson Zheng posted the day’s low round, a 4-under 66.

Lorenz (T6, -1) opened his day with a birdie on the first hole, followed by another on the par-5 third to get to 2-under early. A bogey on the ninth was remedied by a third birdie on No. 11, moving him back into the top five. The Peoria, Ariz., product posted a bogey on the 17th to drop into sixth with Summy at 1-under par.

Summy (T6, -1) joined Lorenz with a birdie on the first hole. He added two more birdies on Nos. 6 and 11, but a pair of bogeys on the eighth and 17th dropped him to 1-under and three back of the lead.

Drew Goodman and Luke Kluver fired matching 73s (+3) and share 31st. Goodman finished fifth and second in the 2022 and 2023 regionals, respectively. True freshman Ryder Cowan wrapped up the scorecard with a 74 and is in 43rd.

The Sooners will tee off with West Virginia (T5, +5) and San Diego (T5, +5) on Tuesday beginning at 10:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring for all NCAA Regionals is provided on Golfstat.
