Cowgirl Fierro blitzes Betsy Rawls field in record-breaking fashion
AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman Isabella Fierro joined the Oklahoma State women’s golf record books en route to notching her first collegiate victory at the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
After shooting 4-under par in both rounds on Saturday, Fierro turned in a bogey-free 7-under par 65 on Sunday to run away from the field and claim the first victory by a Cowgirl freshman since Kenzie Neisen in 2016.
Her 201 is the lowest 54-hole score in Cowgirl golf history by four strokes. The previous record was set by All-American Caroline Hedwall, who shot an 11-under par 205 at the 2008 Las Vegas Collegiate. Fierro also tied for the lowest 54-hole score in the history of the Betsy Rawls Invitational.
Fierro’s final round 65 tied for the third lowest round in school history, and is tied for the second lowest to-par round ever by a Cowgirl. She is the first Cowgirl to win an event since Maddie McCrary won the Windy City Collegiate Classic in 2017, and her victory is the 88th in school history.
As a team, the Cowgirls finished the tournament in third place after shooting a 13-under par 851. Their 54-hole score of 851 is the fifth lowest score in OSU history.
No. 4 Texas took home the team title for the third consecutive year on their home course topping No. 6 Kent State by two strokes and OSU by six strokes after carding a combined round of 273, which is the lowest team round in the history of the tournament.
Two other Cowgirls finished inside the top 20 on the individual leaderboard. Han-Hsuan Yu and Michelle Forsland both birdied three holes on the back nine to end their final round strong. Yu finished tied for 10th place with a 1-under par 215 for the tournament. Forsland carded a 217 to finish in a tie for 16th place.
Hailey Jones and Lianna Bailey both carded above par in the final round. Bailey ended the tournament tied for 22nd place, while Jones came in a tie for 45th.
Fierro and the Cowgirls will take a week off before returning to action Oct. 25-27, in the Landfall Tradition tournament in Wilmington, North Carolina.
