Cowgirls open spring season with fifth place in Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto RicoOklahoma State women’s golf rounded out the Puerto Rico Classic in fifth place on Tuesday, finishing the three-day tournament at 4-under 860.

The Cowgirls carded their best round of the tournament with a 3-under 285 in the final 18, while No. 3 Arkansas was crowned champion at the Grand Reserve Golf Club. Entering the day in fourth, the Razorbacks skyrocketed into first after a 12-under 276 final round.

Maddison Hinson-Tolchard passed Annie Thurman for fifth in the program record books with 329 career birdies on Tuesday. Hinson-Tolchard posted two birdies in the final 18 and eight in the tournament to climb up the rankings in OSU’s 30 years of tracking.

The back-to-back Big 12 Player of the Year ended her time in Puerto Rico with a bogey-free, 2-under 70 round to finish tied for 16th in the field with rounds of 73-72-70.

Marta Silchenko matched Hinson-Tolchard to finish tied for 16th with rounds of 68-72-75. Silchenko wrapped up action with a baker’s dozen in birdies – good for the second-most in the field.

Ellie Bushnell had a stellar final round, trotting out six birdies for a 4-under 68 to log the fifth 60s round of her collegiate career. Bushnell caught fire mustering up four birdies in five holes (Nos. 12, 13, 14 and 15) to push the Cowgirls within one stroke of the individual lead during the back nine.

Bushnell ended the tournament with 11 birdies.

Angelica Pfefferkorn concluded the tournament with a par-72 round to finish in the top 50. Pfefferkorn opened the day with a birdie and posted pars on the entire back nine.

Clemence Martin finished tied for 35th in Rio Grande, carding a 5-over 77 in the final round, while Sammie Miller also posted a 77 as an individual.

Next up, the Cowgirls head to Humble, Texas, to compete at the ICON Invitational at the Golf Club of Houston from Feb. 26-27.
