Davis reaches round of 32 in U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Erin Hills
Ian Davis of Edmond advanced to the round of 32 in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship by completing a 2 and 1 victory over Ben Cooley of Phoenixville, Pa., on Wednesday morning at Erin Hills Golf Club.
The match began Tuesday evening in the tournament which has been plagued by rain. Davis will face Yaroslav Merkulov of Rochester, N.Y. in the round of 32 Wednesday afternoon. Live scoring and more on the event is available at www.usga.org.
Davis finished tied for ninth in the huge field in the 36 holes of stroke play that pared the field to 64 for match play, shooting rounds of 71-68 to finish at 2-under. The current Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur champion and past Junior champion played for Oklahoma State, then professionally from 2014-19 before regaining his amateur status.
Davis was the only one of five Oklahomans competing in the event to make the cut. Missing the cut were Gerod Black and Taylor Wallner at plus 10, Matthew Rison at plus 14 and Austin Schmidt at plus 17.
