Davis, Schmidt, Rison, Black, Wallner to compete in U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship

ERIN, Wis. (Sept. 5, 2022) – Five Oklahoman including current Oklahoma Golf Association State Amateur champion Ian Davis of Edmond are in the field for the 41st U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship Saturday (Sept. 10) and Sunday (Sept. 11), at 7,358-yard, par-71 Erin Hills, in Erin, Wis., and at 6,726-yard, par-70 Blue Mound Golf & Country Club, in Wauwatosa, Wis.

Davis, a former Oklahoma State golfer who played professionally for most of six years until regaining his amateur status, won the 2022 OGA State Amateur with a 1 up victory over Jacob Prentice. Austin Schmidt, whom Davis edged in the quarterfinals, is also in the tournament, as are Taylor Wallner of Oklahoma City, who played collegiately at Arkansas Tech, Gerod Black, a Gaillardia Country Club member who played collegiately at Southern Nazarene, and Matthew Rison of Edmond, the 2014 OGA Mid-Amateur champion.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur consists of 36 holes of stroke play on Sept. 10 and 11, after which the 264-player field will be reduced to the low 64 scorers. There will be six rounds of match play, starting Sept. 12. The quarterfinals and semifinals are slated for Wednesday, Sept. 14. The championship is scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Thursday, Sept. 15, starting at 7 a.m. CDT. The U.S. Mid-Amateur champion receives a full exemption into the 2023 U.S. Open Championship.
