Fowler, Gooch highlight another dynamic weekend for state golfers

It was quite a weekend for Oklahoma State and Oklahoma golf in general, with Rickie Fowler, dressed in his Sunday orange, breaking through at the Rocket Mortgage in Detroit and Midwest City native and fellow OSU alum Talor Gooch capturing his third victory in LIV Golf.

Those were the huge storylines but there were others as well. Taylor Moore of Edmond was the first and second-round leader in Detroit and may well have picked up his second PGA Tour victory of the season if not for a balky putter during Saturday’s third round. He tied for fourth and moved up to 20th in the FedExCup standings.

On the Korn Ferry Tour, it took 6-under just to make the cut at the Memorial Health Championship in Springfield, Ill. Four players with state ties did so, led by former Sooner Chris Gottereup at 16-under and tied for 32nd, followed by Patrick Welch (OU) and Josh Creel (Edmond) at 15-under and Brendon Jelley of Jenks at 14 under.

Two Oklahomans competed in the U.S. Senior Open at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, Wis. Tim Fleming, director of golf at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, and Scott Verplank of Oak Tree National both missed the cut in the event won by the ageless Bernhard Langer.
