NANSHAN, China (Oct. 13, 2013) – Oklahoma Christian alum Rhein Gibson has had a successful summer of golf, winning two tournaments, but it was a fourth-place finish in a OneAsia pro event that might be his most impressive recent outing.

Gibson closed with a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday to tie for fourth place at 6-under in the Nanshan China Masters, and two players who finished in front of him have previously won major golf championships – Charl Schwartzel (2011 Masters) and Darren Clarke (2011 British Open).

Schwartzel finished at 9-under on the 7,419-yard Montgomerie Course at Nanshan International Golf Club, with Clarke and defending champion Liang Wenchong a shot back at 8-under. Gibson was in a group of five players at 6-under 282 and earned $38,760.

Gibson opened the tournament with a 74 on Thursday, but bounced back with a 69 on Friday before shooting a 70 on Saturday.

Gibson, a graduate of OneAsia’s Q-School in California earlier this year, won the Arkansas Open last month at Burns Park Golf Course in North Little Rock, Ark., and took the NGA Tour’s Avoca Classic at Scotch Hall Preserve in Windsor, N.C., in June.

Gibson, from Linsmore, Australia, was a four-time NAIA All-America first-team selection (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) at OC. He won four individual titles – the third-best total in school history – while helping the Eagles to a pair of runner-up finishes and a pair of third-place team showings at the NAIA Championships.

He won the Oklahoma state amateur title and was named as the Oklahoma state amateur player of the year in 2008. He also set a world scoring record by shooting a 55 at River Oaks Golf Club in Oklahoma City in May 2012.

Gibson and five others will be inducted into the OC Athletic Hall of Fame on Jan. 24.
