RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University closed out a highly successful fall season by shooting a tournament low round of 304 Tuesday at the Coqui Classic, leading to a 12-stroke win over ninth-ranked William Carey (Miss.).

All five teams in the tournament played at the par-71 Rio Mar Country Club Ocean Course are ranked in the latest NAIA Women’s Golf Coaches’ Top-25 poll. Following OCU (305-305-304–914) and William Carey (310-307-309–926) in the final team standings were seventh-ranked Southeastern (Fla.) (309-306-314–929), third-ranked Texas Wesleyan (313-313-311–937) and 10th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan (313-323-309–945).

OCU had four top-10 finishers with senior Natalie Gough shooting her second consecutive round of 74 this morning, jumping her from second to first place in the final individual standings with a 225 card (77-74-74). That score was good for a one-stroke win over Julia Baker from William Carey.

“I am beyond proud of this semester and our body of work,” Oklahoma City coach Marty McCauley said. “This group is extremely close-knit, and I have no doubt that has led to their success on the course both as a team and individually.”

Oklahoma City freshman Maddi Kamas tied for fourth place (75-78-76–229), and freshmen Reagan Chaney (75-77-78–230) and Paige Wood (78-76-76–230) tied for seventh place. Senior Lauren Behnken placed 29th (86-83-80–249) for the Stars.

Competing as individuals for OCU were senior Rachel Eckert (79-79-81–239, tie for 16th), freshman Jamie Welsh (75-81-84–240, tie for 18th), freshman Morgan Palermo (81-74-75–240, tie for 18th) and freshman Meghan Charles (286-80-78–244, 25th place).

The Coqui Classic team title is the fourth team title for the Stars in five fall tournaments played. That is the most first-place fall finishes since 2007 when OCU took first place in all four tournaments played. The Stars would build on that momentum to capture the 2008 NAIA National Championship.

OCU resumes its season for the spring Feb. 22-23 when the Stars host the Las Vegas Shootout at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
