Sydney Hermann was ready to reward herself with a trip to Braum’s after a clutch 1-under 71 lifted her to the Class 6A state championship Thursday at Earlywine Golf Course in Oklahoma City.

Edmond North, meanwhile, received equally impressive rounds from its top two players as Grace Griggs shot an even-par 72 and Emily Miller came in at 74, powering the Huskies to a seven-shot victory over Jenks and their second consecutive state championship under coach Brock VanCleave.

Griggs, a senior who is committed to Southern Methodist, had alerted her coach the night before that the tournament had her first round of 80 listed as a 79. Armed with a clear conscience, she played brilliantly Thursday, jumping from well back to fourth overall.

“It shows her character in making it right as soon as she found out,” VanCleave said. “We always say we would rather lose with integrity than win and feel bad about it. But this is just a great culmination for her and how hard she’s worked. She’s coming off double knee surgery and just been getting better and better.”

Miller placed third individually at 150. The Huskies also received big improvements from Claire Ledbetter, who shot 80-76, and Natalie Igo (85-79).

Jenks was led by top-10 finishers Kennedy Maybee (79-75) and Katelyn Bollenbach (81-74).

Hermann overtook first-round leader Emma Shelley of Bartlesville, who struggled with her putter all afternoon to mar an otherwise an otherwise fine ball striking day and shot 77. Shelley had opened with a 71 and Hermann 74. The two friends have been competing since age 11 and embraced afterward.

“The game plan today was to be aggressive and see if I can shoot low,” said Hermann, who will attend Dalton State (Ga.) College on a golf scholarship next fall.

Hermann was just that on the par-5 eighth hole, bombing a drive of over 280 yards and knocking a wedge to 5 feet and converting the eagle putt. She also reached the par-5 18th in two shots and two-putted for birdie. Her only bogeys came on holes 15 and 16, but she never doubted herself.

“This is unreal,” she said. “It’s what I’ve wanted all year and I’ve fought for it. I just said anything that you can go for today, go for it.”

Shelley, who was vying to follow former teammate Faith Hopkins as 6A individual champion, said it was just one of those days where no putts would fall.

Ponca City’s Sydney Hermann shot a 1-under final round 71 to win 6A girls state championship at Earlywine Golf Course in Oklahoma City. Bartlesville‘s Emma Shelley led after one round but fell to second with 148.
