KANSAS CITY — The MIAA announced on Wednesday that RiverHawks sophomore Aitana Hernandez has been named the MIAA Co-Athlete of the Week along with Rogers State golfer  Marybeth Bellnap.

The two tied for first place in the 21st Annual NSU Classic on Tuesday. Hernandez won on the first tiebreaker hole. She became the first NSU athlete to win the tournament since Bailey Price in 2016. The RiverHawks finished the tournament tied for fourth with Harding University.

This is the first time in her career that Hernandez has won this honor. Last season she WGCA All-Region and All-MIAA honors.

Hernandez and the rest of the RiverHawks will be back in action on Sept. 23-24 at the MIAA Preview, held at Awarii Dunes Golf Course in Axtell, Neb.

Bellnap shot a tournament-best 1-under-par 71 in the final round to climb the leaderboard. Her birdie putt on 18 essentially clinched the team victory for the Hillcats that featured 14 teams, including six MIAA schools. Her second round and 36-hole scores were both collegiate bests for the sophomore.

Bellnap’s 71 was a collegiate best for the Kingwood, Texas native. The Athlete of the Week honor is the first for Bellnap in her career and the first for the women’s golf program this season.

Bellnap and the rest of the team will have a week off before returning to action on September 24 and 25. The MIAA Preview will be hosted by Nebraska-Kearney at the Awarii Dunes in Axtell, Nebraska.
