Hudelson storms back to win third OGA Mid-Amateur Championship
Kyle Hudelson came from three shots behind on the final nine holes to edge good friend and frequent playing partner Michael Hearne by a shot and win his third Oklahoma Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship in the last five years.
Hudelson, of Oklahoma City, shot a 4-under 68 Tuesday to reach 6-under 138 for the 36-hole championship at Quail Creek Golf & Country Club. That eclipsed Hearne, who shot rounds of 70-69 for a 139 total.
J.D. Pitts of Bethany placed third at 142 (73-69) while Trent Mewbourn of Oklahoma City (71-69) and Ben Klaus of Nicholls Hills (72-71) tied for fourth at 143.
Hudelson shot a back-nine 33 with four birdies and one bogey after trailing at the turn by three shots. Hudelson pitched to a foot or so for an easy birdie on the par-5 18th hole while Hearne, a former star golfer at Southern Nazarene, missed a 15-foot birdie to forge a tie.
Hudelson, who played collegiate golf at Oklahoma Christian, is a two-time champion of this event, having won it in 2019 at Twin Hills Country Club in Oklahoma City and 2020 also at Quail Creek.
“There’s something about this event and Quail Creek,” Hudelson said. “I’m very happy, it was a great event and Mike is a good guy and excellent golfer who I play with all the time at our home course at Gaillardia. I just happened to play very well and get him by one on the back nine. I’m 35 now and you never know how many more big victories there are going to be, so I’m enjoying this one.”
The Oklahoma Women’s Stroke Play Championship was held at Quail Creek as well. Avery Blake of The Woodlands, Texas, shot rounds of 73-72 for a 1-under total of 145 and a four-shot victory over Kate Strickland of Edmond (76-73) in the 12-person field.
