Hughes ties for second, Stanford fourth, Herman fifth in PGA Junior Championship
A three-shot swing on the par-3 17th hole cost Ainslee Stanford III a shot at the Junior PGA Championship Friday at PGA Frisco. The Edmond golfer plugged his tee shot in a bunker leading to a double bogey and fellow co-leader Kailer Stone also made double. The third member of the final group, Jaden Soong, made birdie and shot into the lead at 7-under and wound up winning by a shot.
It was a frustrating end for Stanford who played beautifully throughout the 72-hole event. Also having trouble on that hole was Chase Hughes of Oklahoma City, who made bogey to drop one shot out of the lead at that point at 6 under. He wound up tied for second while Stanford finished tied for fourth at 5-under.
Jacob Newsom of Broken Arrow, tied for fourth beginning the day, dropped out of contention in the final round with a 79. In the girls division, Lisa Herman of Jenks closed with a 73 to move up to a tie for fifth place at even-par 288.
