Hughett, Vitali capture amateur events in Florida, Arizona

Two of the state’s finest senior amateur golfers got out of the Oklahoma winter to have success in prestigious events across the nation last week.

Oklahoma Golf 2023 Hall of Fame inductee Mike Hughett of Owasso won the Super Senior division of the Heron Creek Invitational in North Port, Fla. Hughett shot rounds of 77-73-70 for a five-shot victory over his nearest competitor Steve Groom of Raytown, Mo. Although he competed in the 65-and-over category, Hughett would have likely finished near the top of the overall category as well. Complete scores are here. 

Peter Vitali, the 2023 Senior State Amateur Champion and two-time defending OGA Senior Stroke Play winner, tied for first in the Oro Valley Senior Amateur Championship at The Views Golf Club at Oro Valley in Tucson, Ariz., held Jan. 11-12. Vitali shot rounds of 71-74 to finish at 1-over 145, tied with Dave Henry of Tucson. Complete scores are here.
