Wigington, Vitalli reach OGA Senior State Amateur championship match
A pair of former professionals who have regained their amateur status will battle it out Thursday morning for the Oklahoma Golf Association Senior State Amateur Championship at The Trails Golf Club in Norman.
Dustin Wigington, who played his high school golf in Lawton and was an All-American at Cameron University, reached the finals with a 1 up semifinal victory over Terry Collier of Bixby. He will face Peter Vitali of Oklahoma City, a former PGA club professional, who defeated 2019 champion Blake Gibson of Yukon 1 up in the other semifinal.
Wigingon earlier defeated three-time past champion Michael Hughett of Owasso 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals while Vitali downed Greg Hathaway of Tulsa 2 and 1.
Gibson had defeated Jeff Oakes 2 and 2 Thursday morning. Collier advanced with a 19-hole victory over Guy Child.
On Wednesday, Hughett edged 2020 champion Jon Valuck of Oklahoma City in 21 holes.
Wigington, who tied for the low score in stroke play qualifying, rolled through his two matches, def. three-time champion Kirk Wright of Oklahoma City 4 and 3 and then ousting Joel Driver of Oklahoma City 4 and 3.
Defending champion Christopher Laughlin of Edmond lost in the round of 16 to former Vitali 3 and 2.
