ESCONDIDO, TEXAS – After a Southern California detour of two decades, longtime private Club Manager Joseph (JJ) Wagner has returned to his Texas roots to serve as the new Chief Operating Officer/General Manager at the prestigious Escondido Golf and Lake Club in Horseshoe Bay.
“It’s great to be home,” Wagner said after his first week of leadership at the longtime top 10 rated private Club on Lake LBJ. “I’m thrilled to take on this challenge of helping to lead Escondido to even greater heights as a Member-owned Club and property.”
Before leaving for California, Wagner served as General Manager at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, the former site of the PGA Tour’s Texas Open and Champions Tour and Odessa (TX) Country Club. He attended college and received his Master’s Degree at the University of Texas at Permian Basin.
“I’ve been amazed at the number of Members here whom I have known in the past or met me when I was working in West Texas or San Antonio. We already have a great bond with the people here and are only working to make the Club better with Members, old and new, and their guests.”
“My wife Connie and I are happily returning to our roots in Texas, looking forward to meeting old and new friends, and creating positive experiences for all Members and guests.”
Longtime San Antonio Country Club General Manager Marvin Jones, who knew Wagner when he worked in South Texas, said Escondido made a great choice for its new COO/General Manager.
“JJ is really a good guy. We’re glad to have him back in Texas.”
Wagner, who is still in the process of getting to know the Club staff along with Escondido Members, will oversee the Club which opened in 2006, and includes an award-winning par 71 Tom Fazio Golf Course along with a gorgeous, Tuscan-style Clubhouse.
It is annually ranked in the top 10 overall in the state, and has hosted several statewide golf tournaments. The Club also has a full service Lakeside Club on constant level Lake LBJ with boats for rent to Members, heated pool with fountains, Pizza Kitchen and Pool Bar.
There are four, large, modern guest houses on property offering four master bedrooms all with their own en suite bath, flat screen TVs in every room, a fully stocked kitchen, common living area, covered back porch leading to a putting green and two fire pits overlooking Pecan Creek and the scenic Club grounds. Escondido is also home to the acclaimed Dave Pelz Short Game School.
While in California, Wagner enjoyed tremendous success in overseeing the expansion at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles and Santa Ana Country Club in Orange County. Wagner served as CEO of the Bel-Air Country Club from 1998-2013, the two-time co-host of the U.S. Amateur Championship, before moving to equal success as the COO/General Manager of Santa Ana Country Club.
