Marquez closes with 68, Tulsa places ninth in Tiger Invitational

OPELIKA, Ala. – The University of Tulsa men’s golf team wrapped up at the Tiger Invitational Presented by Jason Dufner Tuesday after adding a final round score of 294 at the Grand National Lake Course. The Hurricane finished in ninth place with an 885 three-round total.

After starting the tournament with two rounds of 75, Matthew Marquez shot a career-low 68 on Tuesday to finish tied for 19th place with a total of 218. His three-round total and finish also set career-bests.

Senior Matt Mabrey finished with 221, good enough for a share of 31st place. Teammates Sebastian Smith (T-36) and fellow senior Colton Staggs (T-39) were not far behind at 223 and 224, respectively. Francisco Yanez carded 248 through the invitational.

No. 9 Auburn held steady to win team honors after totaling only 839 ahead of second place Troy (867). Georgia State finished in third at 873 followed by South Alabama (876) and Kansas State, Ole Miss and VCU tied for fifth place (881). Michael Johnson (208) from Auburn took home medalist honors and saw four of his teammates finish among the top-six individuals.

Next up for the Golden Hurricane is a trip to Goodyear, Ariz. for the Desert Shootout from March 19-21.
