OWASSO, Okla. – World Golf Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez is making a rare return to Tulsa to join a field with a distinct Oklahoma flavor in the fifth annual Patriot Cup golf tournament held Monday, May 26 at The Patriot Golf Club in Owasso.
Other notable players with Oklahoma ties include former Oklahoma Sate University (OSU) golfers Rickie Fowler, Bob Tway, Kevin Tway, Bo Van Pelt, Scott Verplank and Willie Wood. Former OSU quarterback and current NFL player Brandon Weeden, as well as former OSU and MLB star Mickey Tettleton, are also in the field.
“For these world-renowned athletes, the Patriot Cup is a chance to continue to give back to the community and state where they spent their college years,” said Major Dan Rooney. “We’re proud to welcome Nancy, Rickie and others back to Oklahoma to further the Folds of Honor mission and honor our military heroes this Memorial Day.”
Tickets for the golf event are $20 for adults and are available for sale at all Tulsa-area QuikTrip locations or at Stone Canyon Elementary School day-of the tournament. Children 16 and under, as well as active and non-active military personnel with military ID, are free.
The Patriot Cup benefits the Owasso-based Folds of Honor, an organization founded by Rooney that provides educational scholarships and other assistance to the spouses and dependents of military members killed or disabled while serving our great nation.
The tournament pairs PGA TOUR players and celebrities with an active or non-active military golfer and Folds of Honor partner. The three-player match play event is sponsored by Budweiser and pits the Air Force against the other three Armed Forces divisions (Army, Marines and Navy). The competition will be filmed by NBC Sports/Golf Channel to air during the week of Veteran’s Day in November on Golf Channel.
Folds of Honor recently announced the addition of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star Dean Cain, singer Kid Rock, actor Adam Baldwin and San Jose Sharks player Brent Burns to the 2014 playing field. Others participating in this year’s tournament include golfers Corey Pavin and Gary Woodland, as well as celebrity participants such as Golf Channel personality Michael Breed.
