The No. 18 seed Oklahoma men’s golf team ended its historic NCAA Championships appearance with a 4-1 loss to No. 2 Texas in the match play quarterfinals. The tournament is taking place at the par-70, 7,014-yard Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

The Sooners made their first-ever showing in match play competition, which was introduced to the NCAA Championships in 2009. Additionally, the Sooners made their sixth consecutive appearance in the tournament and join just Georgia, Illinois, Texas and USC as the only programs to reach the national tournament for six straight years.

“This has been a great run out here in Oregon this week, and I am proud of our guys,” seventh-year OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “It didn’t work out today for us, but we needed to be clicking on all cylinders, and we weren’t.”

The four teams advancing from the quarterfinals are Texas, No. 3 seed USC, No. 4 Illinois and No. 20 Oregon. The semifinal round will take place Tuesday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m., and the final round will take place Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Luke Kwon was OU’s sole victor, defeating Texas’s Scottie Scheffler 4 and 3. Opening his final round as a Sooner with a birdie, Kwon set the pace early and never trailed in the match.

“It was great to see Kwon go out winning his match, and he did great today,” Hybl said. “We will miss him next year.”

Freshman Blaine Hale narrowly lost 1-down to Beau Hossler, who is individually ranked No. 3 in Division I golf by Golfweek/Sagarin. Hale took an early 1-up lead with a birdie on hole No. 3. Although Hossler came back to take the lead before the match was ended after hole No. 17, Hale made a strong showing, shooting every completed hole on the back nine at or below par.

Freshman Brad Dalke fell to Gavin Hall 4 and 3. Sophomore Grant Hirschman lost to Taylor Funk 6 and 4, and junior Max McGreevy fell to Doug Ghim 7 and 6.

“This was our first time in this situation, and I think our guys learned a lot,” Hybl said. “We want to be back in this position.”
