NSU sixth, UCO fourth in UNK Invite
KEARNEY, Neb. – The Northeastern State men’s golf team placed sixth at the UNK Fall Invitational following Tuesday’s final round score of 294 on the par-72, 7,001-yard Awarii Dunes Golf Course.
The RiverHawks (307-299-294) posted a three-round total of 36-over-par 900 and improved their score in each round. This marked the first time since April 2011 (UCO/Kickingbird Classic) that the squad accomplished the feat in a three-round tournament.
Host Nebraska-Kearney took home top honors with a 9-under 855. The squad shot a tournament-best 274 in the final round to win by 14 strokes. Lindenwood (289-296-284=869) and Fort Hays State (295-299-291=885) finished behind the Lopers, while No. 15 Central Missouri (292-304-291=887) leapfrogged No. 12 Central Oklahoma (290-305-298=893) for the fourth-place spot.
Two freshmen paced Northeastern State in Tate Williamson and Marc Johnson. Williamson landed in a tie for 13th with a 4-over 220 (72-74-74). Johnson also shot 74 in the final round and tied for 29th at 11-over 227 (76-77-74).
Sophomore Michael Varner tied for 34th with a steady 12-over 228 (76-76-76=228), while junior Josh Strimple posted a team-best 72 in the final round to tie for 40th at 14-over 230 (83-75-72). Rounding out the RiverHawks was sophomore Brent Williamson, who carded a 16-over 232 (84-74-74).
Northeastern State will take the next weekend off before playing host to the 15th Annual NSU Men’s Golf Classic Sept. 23-24 at Emerald Falls GC in Broken Arrow, Okla.
